UH30018 Vietnamese/Southern Chinese Catholic Latin Cross, ebony inlaid with Sea Snail shell from the South China Sea having decorative floral scrolling and Christian religious symbols including; a dove symbol of the holy spirit, surrounded by a crown of thorns symbol of the Passion of Christ, a chalice symbol of the Holy Eucharist and the forgiveness of sin with the monogram of Jesus “IHS” inscribed, the sacred heart of Mother Mary pierced with seven daggers symbol of the seven sorrows of Mary, a ladder crossed with reed and sponge, symbol of Christ’s crucifixion, three nails symbol of the nails used to hang Christ on the cross, scull and cross bones at the point of the cross where Christ’s feet would have been symbolising Christ’s victory over death. Contemporary wall mount hanger on the reverse side. Minor losses to inlay otherwise fine condition. 19-1/2” Long x 10-1/8” Wide x 1/2” Deep. 19th Century.
