UH80037 Laotian Wood Buddha Image, carved from a single piece of dense hardwood covered in red pigment with gold leaf details, the figure is seated in the padmasana cross legged, square shoulders, the long fingered hands in the bhumisparsa mudra (earth touching gesture) where the left hand is resting on the right foot at an exaggerated right angle and the right hand extends over the right knee with the fingertips just touching the pedestal, the simple robe is depicted by a relief carved border for the robe diagonally across the chest and back and the slender Sanghati sash in the center of the body terminating in the front at the abdomen and at the base on the back, all in gold leaf contrasting with the red pigment of the robe, the face with small nose raised eyelids, partially closed eyes, and a large smile with red lips, the ears as a crescent moon, the hair in linear incised lines with a bun usnisa having a four sided lotus bud finial. The image is seated on an angular pedestal, the front in gold leaf with an etched inscription (not translated).
Condition: Minor signs of wear and age otherwise excellent.
